Washington Post:

NATO defeat in Kosovo

May 15, 1999

New York, May 14 (Tanjug) - The Washington Post ran today an article of the former US State Secretary Alexander Haig pointing out to NATO alliance they were defeated in Kosovo.

Haig had been the commander of the NATO forces in Europe and is now forwarding severe criticism on the account of the American Administration. Now the alliance strategy was yoked to Russian mediation as the best and quickest way out, Haig says.

In the meantime, the inevitable accidents of war pile up their own casualties, of which the bombing of the Chinese Embassy may not be the last. The American people and other nations in the alliance, are bound to wonder about the utility of tactics that do not help the Kosovars and that appear to lack a military logic in the absence of ground action, Haig says.

The former US State Secretary reiterates some false accusations which the US Administration is using as an excuse for the aggression, pointing out a series of critical assessments on the American relying on Russia, despite Moscow's undeniable objective of weakening NATO.

Nearly all the politicians in Moscow relish a NATO defeat in Kosovo. Russian mediation will therefore be designed to stress Moscow's essential role, thereby restoring domestic prestige and increasing Washington's incentive to support additional financial aid. And all of this can now be achieved, thanks to Washington, while handing NATO a defeat, says Haig.

It has driven the Russians and the Chinese into a common position with real leverage over our policy and every incentive to hurt us. That could damage the western military block, says Haig demanding the reconsideration of the US foreign policy.
