Appeal for immediate halt of bombing of Yugoslavia
May 21, 1999

Giesbach, May 20 (Tanjug) - The war which started on March 24, 1999 against Yugoslavia has to stop immediately, said the participants of the international group "Truth about the Balkan war and its consequences on the European environment" in appeal addressed to aggressor's countries, UN Security Council, NATO command and world public.

The appeal from the meeting held in town of Giesbach, Switzerland from May 17 to May 19, 1999 in organization of Franz Weber Foundation says that the war has to be stopped immediately because of following reasons:

1. War is not legitimate

-because it only aggravated dramatic situation of Kosovo refugees which should be solved. From a local conflict, this war became a humanitarian tragedy on the European level which endangers the world peace and puts the international laws under the supervision of stronger side.

-because it started under the excuse of protection of Albanian population in Kosovo, and it turns the province into a devastated land unsuitable for living.

-Because it came after the ultimate with so called "peace plan" from Rambouillet which annulled the sovereignty of FR Yugoslavia and which no country could sign.

2. War is illegal

Attacking a sovereign state which did not attack none of its neighbors, and less than that none of the NATO members, the Alliance violated its statute, the UN resolution and democratic principles of member countries.

3. Targeting all civilian infrastructure facilities, NATO attacks on purpose the life of innocent people. Bombings caused thousands of civilian victims and made the country unsuitable for living.

4. This is barbarianism of huge proportions is exposing Balkans and Europe to the ecocide with unpredictable consequences. Destruction of chemical facilities, refineries, power stations, filter installations, factories etc., caused serious pollution of air and rivers. This rage without precedent endangers the land and underground water in FR Yugoslavia, which is one of the biggest reservoirs of drinking water in Europe.

NATO is using munitions with depleted uranium, what caused toxic and radioactive evaporations which will endanger future generations.

5. This war is against Europe

-against its economy, because the sailing on Danube is now not possible, main waterway over the continent.

-against its social and political balance, because a massive group of refugees, whose number grows everyday, is being caused, while chances for return are smaller and smaller.

-against its ecosystem, because it endangered the life circle of animals in huge proportions by pollution of the Black sea river basin.

-against its atmosphere, because of intensitivity of flights of airplanes (more than 20.000 flights in 50 days)

-against its democratic values, because of serious political decisions which are adopted without consultations with people and parliaments, because of mass media which renounced its critical opinion and which turned into a NATO spokesman.

We will stick together with all the people of Yugoslavia and neighboring countries, victims of that destructive madness. We request immediate halt of bombing, renewal of fair negotiations, and commitment for responsible countries to renew the living conditions for return of refugees into Kosovo and for decent life in Yugoslavia, is said in the appeal of scientists, writers, diplomats, lawyers, theologists, journalists and artists of Europe and America who participated at the meeting in Giesbach.
